For conversion into electronic manuals, "SGML" and "XML" are adopted in various industries from public offices to European and American aircraft and automobile industries. Nowadays the eBooks (data) for iPad and other reader tools are also created in XML.

What We Gained From Our Rich Experiences in the Aerospace Industry;

We have developed commercial aircraft manuals with SGML from 1999, and domestic helicopter manuals with XML from 2002, in cooperation with our customers.

The manuals using XML were constructed with about 120 types of manuals such as maintenance manual, parts catalog and flight handbook (operational manual), and its enormous volume reached 40,000 pages in A4 size. The conversion into electronic format was their first case for the aircraft manufacturer, as it was for us.

We participated from the stage of discussing the specifications for clarifying the aims of each manual and research of the required items. We verified each manual from different perspectives such as frequency of use, frequency of revision, number of distribution and properties, and combined formats such as XML and PDF by usage, to pursuit a manual configuration with respect to the users' operation efficiency. We have succeeded in putting it into practical use after 3 years of our best tries and efforts.

However, there is no end to the development operations of electronic manuals.

There must be additions of new features and improvements of the program based on the users' opinions, as well as revisions in response to new technology trends. Maintenance and revision process continues after delivery to aim for a more "efficient and easy-to-use" product.
